POYET IS CONFIDENT

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet has said that he is confident that the club can repeat the feat achieved by Wigan. Wigan were in the third division of English football just over a decade ago, but they have spent the last eight seasons in the Premier league. Even though they have fought against relegation in almost every single season since coming to the Premier league, they have managed to defy all odds and stay in the division. Poyet has said that he is confident that Brighton can achieve the feat once again.

Poyet has revealed that he has a great relationship with Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

Poyet managed to lead his team to a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in the first leg of the play-off semi-final. The second leg will be at home for Brighton, which is a huge advantage. They will be looking to seal a place in the final of the play-offs, in which they will be facing Watford. Chelsea legend Zola helped Watford seal place in the play-offs final with a last-minute victory against Leicester City. He has said that the home advantage will be a major positive aspect for Brighton in the second leg.

“Roberto and I are closer in the way we try to play than most managers in this country. We don’t know yet whether Wigan will be safe — but they have established themselves for quite a few seasons in the Premier League. And it would be nice to follow them. People say we are favourites but let’s make sure we use that home advantage. The tie is 50-50 but with 30,000 in the ground we’ll have an advantage. The fans can give us that bit extra,” said Poyet. The club finished the season in the fourth position just two points behind Watford.
